Professor Schowen has closed his research groups, but continues to work in collaboration with colleagues at Kansas and elsewhere. Active programs at Kansas include these projects: (1) Studies of the mechanism, involvement of protein dynamics, and antiparasitic drug design for S-adenosylhomocysteine hydrolases (led by R.T. Borchardt with collaboration by J. Fang, Lynne Howell [Toronto], Carey Johnson, Krzysztof Kuczera, C.R. Middaugh, and Morris Robins [Brigham Young University]); (2) Design and characterization of “green catalysts” with R.S. Givens and others in the NSF Center for Environmentally Beneficial Catalysis, led by Daryle Busch and Bala Subramaniam; (3) Protium-deuterium exchange in the amorphous solid state as a measure of protein mobility, led by Elizabeth M. Topp.
