Research Grant awarded to Molecular Biosciences Faculty
Mizuki Azuma (associate professor) was awarded a research grant from the Alan B Slifka Foundation entitled “Identification of the novel drugs that target EWS haploinsufficiency in Ewing sarcoma.” Ewing sarcoma is the second most common bone cancer that develops in children and adolescent. Since there are no FDA-approved drugs that specifically designed for these patients, the team aims to identify drugs that target Ewing sarcoma cells. Additionally, the team will study the mechanism of how Ewing sarcoma cells gain abnormal copy numbers of DNAs. Dr. Azuma will collaborate on this project with Dr. Tomoo Iwakuma, professor of cancer biology at the KU Medical Center.
