Current Research: My main project is to study and understand coronaviruses macrodomains. The coronaviruses encode this structurally conserved domain within the nsP3 of all lineages, including the MHV, SARS-CoV, MERS-CoV and SARS-CoV-2. The interest of this protein due to the fact that it has an enzymatic activity to remove ADP-ribose from target proteins and therefore any drug targeting this protein may have broad antiviral activity against various coronaviruses. To study the function of this protein I used different approaches in vitro and in vivo in actual viruses using BSL-2 and the BSL-3 facility that recently has been constructed at the KU.
