A primary component of speciation is the evolution and maintenance of reproductive isolation. During my PhD I studied how a maternally inherited endosymbiont, Wolbachia, contributes to reproductive isolation between two closely related Drosophila species. At KU I am studying a polymorphic B chromosome in the fly species Drosophila putrida. Using a combination of cytological and genomics approaches I am investigating the potential for this B chromosome to produce a novel reproductive barrier between populations of D. putrida with and without a B chromosome.
